Storm Family

Club = Family = Community

The Storm family started with different branches, but are slowly coming under the same umbrella.

The men started fall 2021 with several Altonians wanting to get together weekly to have a 'run'. With Matt teaching at Alton College, their sports hall became a natural choice for training. Diego and Kev recruited anyone and everyone from the streets and playgrounds around Alton. Some young guns from the college team made us feel like we were moving faster on aggregate, with Jamie the only one to match their energy. Every top team needs imports, so Antonio and Roman brought Iberian flair as well as equestrian skills. As word spread outside of Alton, vets like Kenton made the weekly commute and then we found our ringer, MJ.

Not only did we miss basketball over covid and lockdown - we also missed socialising and gathering together. Our 10 minutes before and after training became arguably more important than our time playing and we realised that we were all a bunch of great guys. After almost a year of at least 5 guys showing up we decided to take our show on the road and test our talents. In July 2022 we took the dive and registered with Basketball England and officially created the Alton Basketball Club - the Alton Storm, competing in the Wessex 1st Division. What could go wrong? After all, we have MJ...

The youth had 2 births - one at the sports centre with Everyone Active and the other at the College. U8s feels like herding cats at times, but they are progressing by leaps and bounds and are hungry for the next step, competition. U12 has exploded so much we have had to draft in 2 Storm members to help coach, Pete and MJ. With this growth, the next step is competition and creating a performance group.

The U16 groups has had it's ups and downs at the college as the young men try and balance studies with sports and other interests. With a solid foundation of U12s in the pipeline, this groups will also be ready for competition and growth.

How it started - the 'OGs'

Matt

Old skool, 'economical' player. Lost desire to play competitevly with the development of colour photography. 3 caps with Nigerian national team, naturalised French who prefers to speak German. Overall, confused.

MJ

The talent. Can't be solar powered because we don't see the sun much, but somehow never runs out of energy. Likes to complete a triathlon on game days for warm up.

Ken - Ton

The glue holding this fragile creation together. Can't leave him open anywhere on the court. At one point averaged more concussions than points (the epitome of 'taking one (or more) for the team!) despite sinking the first ever points of the Storm in competition!

Olly

Youngest OG and, arguably, most improved until a knee injury sidelined him for most of the 2022-2023 campaign. Due to his amazing speed, no pics exist of his front side and no one is able to give a reliable description of Flash
